Pest control written for a temperate climate does not translate to the Valley. It is why treating a Phoenix property means dusting and treating walls and voids, not simply spraying a baseboard indoors. Decorative gravel and rock landscaping works the same way at ground level, giving scorpions, crickets, and spiders endless harborage right up against the foundation, which is why pulling rock and mulch back a few inches from the wall makes a real difference. And across newer master-planned communities in Gilbert, Chandler, and the fringes of the Valley, homes are built directly onto former desert and farmland where the scorpions, ants, and termites were already established. The pests do not leave when the subdivision arrives; they simply move into the new structures. That is why new-build owners are often surprised to find they have more scorpion activity than a neighbor in an older, established neighborhood.
What actually keeps a Phoenix home protected
Three things do the heavy lifting, and only one of them is spraying. Exclusion comes first - sealing the gaps pests use, adding door sweeps and weatherstripping, screening weep holes and vents, and closing the openings where pipes and wiring enter the wall. A bark scorpion can pass through a gap about the width of a credit card, so sealing is not a detail, it is the foundation of scorpion control. Habitat reduction comes next: trimming plants back so they do not bridge the wall, keeping firewood and clutter off the ground, fixing leaks and irrigation, and clearing the standing water that follows a monsoon. Recurring treatment is what maintains the barrier the desert is constantly testing - a single spray degrades in the Arizona sun and gives you weeks, not seasons.
